mámawihítowin was the recipient of the 2023 Governor General’s History Award for Excellence in Museums: History Alive!

I spent the greater part of 2023 as Project Coordinator for the project mámawihitowin - Ganaagishkwadaaduwin - Asenbli, which was hosted at the Manitoba Craft Museum and Library in Winnipeg. A team of Indigenous artists, historians, and Elders examined grandmother pieces from 11 museums and were able to narrow down their home communities and the stories connected to them.

Our time in Ottawa was brief, but certainly memorable. We were nominated for the Museum category, and were among 10 other recipients in varying categories such as Teaching, Popular Media and Community Programming. In my opinion, the efforts and dedication from everyone involved in the project throughout its journey are a huge part of how we earned the Governor General History Awards distinction.

I went into this trip and the scheduled events with the intention of representing my michif community, the community members and researchers involved in the project and the grandmothers composing the entirety of the project. I saw each event as an opportunity to showcase these art forms our grandmothers masterfully studied, as well as share the stories of these mediums to those in attendance.
